Next G is a network promoted and used exclusively by Telstra. It provides better speeds due to the lower frequency and provides better coverage using Telstra’s superior infrastructure. The frequency of the Next G network is 850Mhz compared to Optus’ 2100Mhz (or 2.1Ghz) 3G network (in which Virgin, Vodafone, 3Mobile resell).
When purchasing a device to be used on the Next G network, check the frequency bandwidth compatibility, if it runs on WCDMA 850Mhz, then it will work. You DO NOT have to purchase a device from Telstra to benefit from Next G speed and coverage.

An important point to note is “Why you might use Next G” over other services provided by Optus and Vodafone for example. Next G was rolled out to be a replacement to the CDMA network that gave the best regional coverage in the past, and to date Next G does offer the best mobile coverage in regional areas.
If you do use Next G for this reason, it’s important to get a handset that is rated well for Rural use. Telstra have an easy guide to do this, the “Blue Tick” system which they mark certain devices with that they advise are better for rural coverage. There are also other devices like the Nokia 6120 that can take an external antenna when coupled with a Force cradle in the car, this can also help you with coverage.
We can definitely help advise you on this here at Organiser World!
The best advice I can give though is to do your homework when buying something as important as your phone. Whilst we as sales consultants try to be as informed as we can about devices and how well they perform, it’s great to look at reviews and user forums to find people using the device in a similar circumstance as yourself and take this information on board before making up your mind.
Happy hunting!
Yes very good point Sarah.
