Difference between an HTC 11-pin MiniUSB cable and a standard 8-pin MiniUSB cable

A lot of people are confused by the unusual shape of the HTC Mini USB connections. The difference being one straight edge, and one jaggered edge, as below:

This configuration is to encompass the extra 3 pins required to provide headset compatibility (left headphone, right headphone, mic)

To sync or charge an HTC device, you only require 8-pins, as below.
