In recent years we have seen an increase in grey imports in Australia.
You can usually tell a grey importer by their vague warranty description and “too good to be true” pricing.
Where you may be saving money in the short term, you should also consider the long term implications of an import.
Usually what will happen in the event of a warranty claim is that they’ll accept the device back into their store/PO box and send it to the country of purchase (often Europe or Asia) for assessment and repair. This can and will increase the time you are without your device.
They also use the term “Australian warranty” very loosely, it is not an ”Manufacturer Australian Warranty”, ie. You will not be able to take your imported Nokia E72 into a local Nokia Care centre, as you IMEI number will not match any entry in their “Australian IMEI” database.
Things to look out for with a grey importer:
- A VoIP phone number, eg. 0390160371
- A PO Box address on their website
- Will only accept credit cards, will not offer bank deposit as a payment type
- Only have a email contact form on their website
