If you’ve been reading earlier in the week, you would have seen that I was pretty peeved with a certain local phone network, and their pricing policies. Thinking that the HD2 had been upped to a price that was beyond my means, I went to local PDA supplier Organiser World. They were sold out, but expecting more the following day, and the price was right. The service was great, I much prefer buying devices from other geeky Windows Phone enthusiasts. Rather than corporate drones.

The HD2 is probably the most anticipated windows phone of all time, and I certainly didn’t expect to get my hands on one this quickly. Just a quick refresh on the specs

What’s the difference between a netbook and a notebook?

Netbooks are designed primarily for the Internet, to view information, learn and communicate with others.
They are usually a compact form factor (around 7-10 inch screen size) and are designed for portability.
Netbooks are light-weight, have long battery life and are less dependent on a battery charger during the day. They can handle most basic office tasks like word processing and spreadsheets etc.
The usual specification for a netbooks is: Low power CPU (Intel Atom Single Core 2Gz>), 1Gb RAM, 160Gb HDD, No DVD drive.

On the other hand, Notebooks are more multiple-purpose computers in a form factor of about ten inches and up, with some desktop replacement notebooks boasting 24-inch screens.
Notebooks are more designed to handle heavy-multi-tasking with many applications running at once. They can view, create, and edit high-definition video content and run intensive programs.

Blueant Supertooth 3 – Device not pairing

“0000″ is indeed the pass code, if it’s not working, you may need to do a factory reset.

Make sure the BlueAnt Supertooth 3 is turned OFF.
Press+Hold the Volume Up button and then also press the green button to reset the unit.
After completing the above reset, turn the ST3 OFF again and wait at least 10 seconds.
Turn unit back ON and select language when prompted.
Follow the voice prompts and pair the ST3

How long does the battery last?
The battery fully charges in 3 hours and last for up to 7,000 page turns. Less when using MP3.

Do I need accessories with my BeBook?
The Bebook one comes with a cover and the BeBook Mini does not come with a cover. For both devices we advice the Stylz leather cases, to provide protection against the BeBook. Damage to the screen is not covered by warranty, so it’s important that the BeBook stays well protected.

Can I get new upgrades of firmware?
The BeBook comes with a lifetime free upgrades of firmware, to benefit from the latest features and formats. To install firmware on a BeBook you need a SD card. We advice a 1GB SD card.

Do I need a charger?
No, you can charge the BeBook with the USB cable which is supplied in the box.

Can I replace the battery myself?
Yes, the battery can be replaced from the outside.

Where can I buy ebooks?
On various websites. Have a look on www.bebook.net.au for a list of recommended websites.

Which music formats are supported on the BeBook?  
MP3 is supported with no DRM.

Can additional software or programs be installed on the BeBook?
No, additional software or programs cannot be installed on the BeBook.

How many books can I store in my BeBook?  
The internal storage capacity is 512MB. It represents 2.500 standard books. You can increase your storage capacity with a memory card up to 4 GB on the BeBook one and 16 GB on the BeBook Mini.

Can I read professional documents?  
Yes you can read most documents you normally use on a computer. BeBook supports all .doc, .rtf, .txt, .htm or pdf files.

Can I read documents in other languages (Chinese, Greek, Russian…)?
Most of the time, yes. For languages with a limited set of character as Cyrillic or Greek, the files can be read in all formats. The BeBook contains default fonts which can decode all these files.

Can I read several books at the same time?  
Yes. Several books in different formats can be read at the same time, and you can switch from one to another very easily.

Can the BeBook be used by visually impaired persons?  
Yes. You can increase the font size or change the font to comfortably read again.

BeBook reads 24 file formats:
pdf, doc, txt, html, bmp, jpg, png, gif, tif, djvu, fb2, wol, epub, ppt, pdb, lit, chm, rar, zip, mp3, mobi, prc, htm, mbp, epub drm all without conversion!

Choosing a book
1.Brows the different folders by using the number and arrow buttons.
2.Choose the right book by using the number buttons.
3.Start reading!

Page turning
1.Use the arrow buttons to scroll pages.
2.Press and hold the button to skip 10 pages forward or back.

Zoom in and out
Press 8 repeatedly to zoom in to the format you prefer, or go to menu (5 zoom) and select your preferred zoom level.

Bookmarks
1.When a page you like to bookmark is displayed, press 6 to set the bookmark.
2.View and go to bookmarks by holding 6 to display a list of all bookmarks.

The OK button
The OK button gives you different possibilities depending if you are at the bookshelf page or reading a book

When at the bookshelf page 1.Change the way you search books (by title, date or type)

2.Change to SD card

3.Change setting (language etc)

When reading a book 1.Go to first or last page

2.Choose a page to go to

3.Go to catalog

4.Zoom

5.Book information

6.Depending on the book format you can also change the font

Downloading files (without DRM) on your BeBook:
1.Plug-in the USB cable in your BeBook and computer
2.Press OK to connect the BeBook to the computer
3.The Computer will recognise the BeBook like an external memory (USB stick) under “My Computer”
4.Files without DRM can be copied and paste from the computer to the BeBook

Downloading files (with DRM) on your BeBook:
For downloading DRM files to your BeBook you will need to install special software on your computer (from Adobe). You can find the software on www.bebook.net.au.

Assessment of HTC Hero

Points of interest:
Great battery life (42 hours with 3G and wifi on)
Responsive screen with great contrast (as good as the iPhone)
Decent social interaction (facebook & myspace)
Easy to use and navigate
Built in compatibility with Exchange.

Minor Notes:
Exchange mail not able to display images if embedded
Facebook application sub-par, 3rd party developer currently.
Optus SIM card will not allow access to Google Android Marketplace, although this is an Optus “innovation”, not HTC.

Conclusion: This device will replace my iPhone very shortly.

Vodafone MMS & PXT on WM6+

WAP:

-         Press Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections Icon.
-         Tap on Advanced then press on Select Networks.
-         On the lower drop down list press new, then type down VF Live & PXT as the name of the new connection then tap on Modem.
-         Press New then type down Vodafone WAP as the new modem name, and select Cellular Line (GPRS) as the modem type then press next.
-         Types down (live.vodafone.com) as the Access Point Name then press next. Leave the User name, Password and the Domain field blank then press Finish.

-         Tap on Proxy Settings and check both boxes on the screen, then press Advanced.
-         Tap on HTTP then put down 10.202.2.60 as the value for the server field, and 8080 as the value for the Port, then press ok
-         Tap on WAP and put down the same values for the Server and the port then press ok.
-         Press ok again and tap on Modem.
-         Now you can see the modem -Vodafone WAP- press and hold on it
-         Select Connect.
-         Now open the start menu and launch the internet browser and try to connect to http://live.vodafone.com, after that you can also try connecting to any other WAP sites.

PXT Settings:
-         Press Start the select Messaging tap on Menu then select MMS configuration.
-         Tap on Servers then press New.
-         Now enter the following values then Press ok then select VF
- PXT and set it as the default then press ok.

Grey Imports .vs. Australian Stock

In recent years we have seen an increase in grey imports in Australia.
You can usually tell a grey importer by their vague warranty description and “too good to be true” pricing.

Where you may be saving money in the short term, you should also consider the long term implications of an import.
Usually what will happen in the event of a warranty claim is that they’ll accept the device back into their store/PO box and send it to the country of purchase (often Europe or Asia) for assessment and repair. This can and will increase the time you are without your device.
They also use the term “Australian warranty” very loosely, it is not an ”Manufacturer Australian Warranty”, ie. You will not be able to take your imported Nokia E72 into a local Nokia Care centre, as you IMEI number will not match any entry in their “Australian IMEI” database.

Things to look out for with a grey importer:
- A VoIP phone number, eg. 0390160371
- A PO Box address on their website
- Will only accept credit cards, will not offer bank deposit as a payment type
- Only have a email contact form on their website

Questions to ask yourself when buying a device

What am I wanting to do with the device?
Am I wanting a touch screen?
Am I wanting a QWERTY keyboard?
Do I want to edit Word documents as well as excel?
What sort of battery life do I expect?
Am I wanting to play movies/music on my device?
What is my budget?
Do I want to pay for the device outright, or do I want to do it on a business lease (ie. Flexirent)

Answering these questions before walking into a store will assist the sales rep in finding the device that is right for you!
