In recent years we have seen an increase in grey imports in Australia.
You can usually tell a grey importer by their vague warranty description and “too good to be true” pricing.

Where you may be saving money in the short term, you should also consider the long term implications of an import.
Usually what will happen in the event of a warranty claim is that they’ll accept the device back into their store/PO box and send it to the country of purchase (often Europe or Asia) for assessment and repair. This can and will increase the time you are without your device.
They also use the term “Australian warranty” very loosely, it is not an ”Manufacturer Australian Warranty”, ie. You will not be able to take your imported Nokia E72 into a local Nokia Care centre, as you IMEI number will not match any entry in their “Australian IMEI” database.

Things to look out for with a grey importer:
- A VoIP phone number, eg. 0390160371
- A PO Box address on their website
- Will only accept credit cards, will not offer bank deposit as a payment type
- Only have a email contact form on their website

Questions to ask yourself when buying a device

What am I wanting to do with the device?
Am I wanting a touch screen?
Am I wanting a QWERTY keyboard?
Do I want to edit Word documents as well as excel?
What sort of battery life do I expect?
Am I wanting to play movies/music on my device?
What is my budget?
Do I want to pay for the device outright, or do I want to do it on a business lease (ie. Flexirent)

Answering these questions before walking into a store will assist the sales rep in finding the device that is right for you!

The first step in trouble shooting your mobile device is wiping it, after syncronising of course (into Outlook etc)

Go to: www.hardreset.eu
Find your device, go to the bottom, following the instructions under “Hard reset”.

This fixes 90% of software glitches/issues.

All Blackberrys sold in Australia are distributed through carrier channels, regardless of whether you buy it outright or get it on a plan. This streamlines the repair process if the unthinkable does happen.

If you’ve bought a Blackberry from Telstra or Vodafone, chances are that it’ll be software and hardware branded.
If it’s from Optus, there may be some software branding in the form of icons, but there will be no hardware branding.
