It provides better speeds due to the lower frequency and provides better coverage using Telstra’s superior infrastructure. The frequency of the Next G network is 850Mhz compared to Optus’ 2100Mhz (or 2.1Ghz) 3G network (in which Virgin, Vodafone, 3Mobile resell).

When purchasing a device to be used on the Next G network, check the frequency bandwidth compatibility, if it runs on WCDMA 850Mhz, then it will work. You DO NOT have to purchase a device from Telstra to benefit from Next G speed and coverage.
